The ultimate guide to choosing A Security Camera System

While choosing a security camera system for your home or office, you have to keep many things in mind, like where it has to be installed, how many cameras do you require, for what purpose do you require them, etc. Thus, it is not an easy job, and you have to be absolutely clear about you requirements.

Let us find out what are the essential things to be considered while buying a surveillance system.

1. Need one or more than one camera

Whether you choose a single or many cameras surveillance solution depends on the size and layout of your property. If you need to know what’s happening in the vast outside area or any rooms, you’ll need more than one camera for better surveillance of the area. As a general rule, many homes or small businesses can be easily monitored with four cameras.  Alarm Reviews states that many people connect their home or business camera system with the best home security system.  One has to make sure each camera can focus on the key areas of space you’re monitoring, including doorways and other opening or entrances like windows, roofs, crawl spaces, anywhere an intruder can gain access from. You can always increase the number of cameras as per your requirements.

2. Will you be using the cameras indoors or outdoors?

Some surveillance cameras are specially designed for either indoor or outdoor use.

  • Indoor cameras tend to be smaller, lighter and generally less visible than the outdoor cameras.
  • The outdoor cameras are often costlier than the indoor models because they’re built to withstand not only the weather elements but also attacks from vandals, thieves, and intruders. Many of today’s higher quality security cameras are designed for both indoor and outdoor use.
  • For an extra area of hidden protection, outdoor surveillance cameras can be disguised as common objects. You can choose a hidden camera and built-in digital video recorder disguised as anything you feel like that is not very obtrusive.

3. Light conditions:

While many business and office compounds are well lit at night but homes are not generally seen well lit. The dimly lit the area, the more likely thieves are going to see it as their target. If you want to protect an area with poor lighting, you’ll have to get an infrared camera system. Cameras with IR features, which is also known as the night vision cameras can shoot and record in complete darkness, and they’re important tools in many surveillance areas. Some cameras may not be infrared ones, but they can also function in dim lights. To help you to compare the features, some manufacturers provide a minimum illumination rating known as LUX. The lower is the LUX rating; the better is the camera’s capacity to capture images in low light.

4. How far or wide angle the security cameras can cover?

The answer to this question depends on your lens size of the camera. So before buying you should see the lens size and focal length the lens can cover. How wide of a viewing angle you need is depending on the image sensor of the camera? Larger image sensors allow more light into the picture and give you a better and wider view of the picture. For example, a sharper lens will help to see almost all around. If you put it in the corner of a room, you’ll see almost the entire room. But other lenses will only give you a viewing angle of roughly a partial side.

5. What degree of recording resolution do I need?

This is a known question when it comes to surveillance systems. Around 550 lines are enough for an indoor system to monitoring a single area under proximity.  If you intend to use the surveillance system for a longer distance, I recommend you to select the resolution of the camera to 700+ that can offer satisfactory image quality.

6. Do I need weatherproof cameras?

If you want to use the surveillance system in the outdoors, it’s better to go with cameras that can withstand any weather. It provides a sense of peace to know your cameras are not affected by extreme rain, wind or snow. You can also place them under an awning or area that is covered and dry.

7. How easily can I set up remote viewing on my security cameras?

  • Every system has its own way of allowing the clients to view the videos the system provides. One must consult your instruction manual for details.
  • Most DVRs are remote viewing capable out of the box. You can watch live events and recorded video from any computer. You can also use apps provided by some systems for easy viewing on your smart phones or PC. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection to your DVR.

8. Is it important to consider the company or brand of the security system?

Yes, it is important to consider the company or brand before purchasing a security system.

One should see:

  • Do they only deal in security products or is it just a side business for them?
  • How long have they been in the business?
  • Finally, is the technical support in-house or by a foreign call center?

While buying any security systems, we should keep all these questions in mind get answered, since it is our safety we are talking about. We should not go for cheap products as they may not function the way how are expected to work it. Thus, we have to be really careful while buying our security systems and make sure we buy the best one.

9. Some important tips for a quick reference:

Since security is an important part of our life, we must take it seriously and choose from among the best. So in short while buying these units keep these things in mind:

1) Don’t break your budget

2) Pick indoor or outdoor

3) Know your target view point

4) Decide on visible or discrete

5) Do you need on night-vision?

6) Pick a resolution you actually need

7) Remember viewing

8) Consider connectivity

9) Software supports

The security camera system reviews have touched various pros and cons of the surveillance systems and highlighting many important technical aspects. Protecting our homes and offices is always a paramount factor, and it must not be taken lightly. So, one must choose wisely and select the best surveillance system for their property.

10. You may want to combine security cameras with a home security system

Many people like having everything interconnected in their home.  Having a separate cameras and security system can cause quite the headache.  Most home security companies now offer cameras in their packaging along with a monitoring rate typically under $50.

Best technology always for your help:

Keeping the security in mind, we must always select the best home security camera system that can provide the best results and without considering much to the price factor. Spending money for a security system is not the final factor, because the system must be able to meet your objectives. Albeit, it is a fact that the more you spend, the better will be the quality and of course with a bundle of features you get.

Of the higher-end features, I’d like to put night vision at the top. Motion detection is also highly desirable, but make sure you can adjust the sensitivity and narrow the range of the scan. You don’t want legitimate moving objects such as windblown plants generating false positives. If you can properly tune the system, you may also want it to send a text message to your phone when motion is detected.

A good security camera system is always designed to meet your expectation and work as a real-time deterrent. It must be able to record any eventualities and can alert you at the right time. Before you decide on a particular surveillance systems, read and try to understand the features of various security camera systems and read various customer reviews. Considering the various options available on security camera system, whether you want to use the security camera indoor or outdoor, whether you need a wireless or wired system, this guide will help users select the best security camera system to meet your requirements.

  1. David

I’ve been thinking about getting a camera for my backyard. You wouldn’t believe how things come up missing front my yard. I really like the smart phone monitoring and I’m leaning toward front point but I just need to check out these cons younhave listed. A activation fee isn’t a problem with me, but I don’t want a huge monitoring fee.

  2. Steve

Great post! You gave me a lot to think about. It’s a great check list on my camera needs. Knowing your target is the first I need to consider before figuring out the others.

  3. Carrie

This is probably the best comparison list of security cameras. I’ve had my share of cheap and crappy cameras in the past and that’s gonna changed now that there are topnotch options that are actually affordable. I didn’t know that I could get the best technology without breaking the bank. I think I just need to review some of the additional fees that come with the product. It’ll make it easier to narrow down the choices even further.

  4. Peter Ross

960H is low resolution by modern standards and since when was picture clarity not a concern in security cameras. I don’t think 500gb is too much memory either, that may come in handy. Other than that great coverage of these top wireless security cameras and you sure saved me a lot of time and money in the long run.

  5. CRad

It’s great that there are more options for consumers, but the downside here is that the more security cameras they launch in the market, the harder it is to choose. The one thing that I’m really sure about is that basic security cam is just not gonna cut it anymore. The more features there are, the better. This is quite a comprehensive review of some of the best security cams. I’d go for HD quality, recording features, monitoring and remote access, and can withstand weather conditions.

  6. Jackson

If you can afford to get something other than Amcrest I would recommend that. Their packages are intriquing, especially the prices but the Swann and other brands are better quality and will last you in the long run.

  7. Bruce

Foscam is my favorite brand of home security cameras. There is a lot you can do with them.

  8. Candice Robberts

Thanks so much for this detailed post! This is my first time looking into the option of having a security system but now that my husband and I have a kid, it is very important to me that we are all safe. I bookmarked it and will go over it again and again. I even e-mailed it to my husband 🙂

  9. Becky Walters

I love how you have included all of these options. Most of the time these posts only have a set price and what you get but you have a nice mix here! I love the cheaper options and will look into them. Thanks so much for taking your time to post all of this. I found you post on Facebook by the way. I am going to re-share it!

  10. Jackson D.

There are a lot of options of there these days so being sure you get everything you want at a price you can afford is important. My advice would be to spend a little more for a good setup at first so you don’t regret not having the right camera system in place when you get it all setup and running.

  11. Michael

I decided to get a system installed last fall and it snows here. I didn’t think anything of the 5 cameras I had outside and assumed they worked fine. Well, they were not all working for over 10 days and I had no idea. My neighbor was robbed and because my side camera was not working, we were unable to help her. Be sure to get weather proof cameras as the author mentions. I wasted so much money.

  12. Sammy L.

The options that work with cell phones are the best in my book. If the company you are considering doesn’t have an app, find someone else. I have been on both ends and I just love having the app for when I am not home. Specially because I have two teenage girls.

  13. Flint Dempsey

Thank you for the list. The comparison is very well detailed. For my home security system, I got a digital video recorder system online from Honeywell. And considering that it has performed exceptionally so far, I am a bit surprised to not see it here. But that doesn’t take anything away from how well the article is written.

  14. Just Someguy

I came here to find a replacement for the Night Owl system I recently bought from CostCo for my retail store. The software of that system is terrible in nearly all areas. My other job is as a software developer, it drives me crazy to use such a clunky system that feels like bad PC software from the mid-80’s.
I spent a few days last week trying to get saved video out of the DVR and onto my laptop for editing. No matter what format you use for export (*.avi or *.364) it ALWAYS exports as *.rf. That format cannot be converted without a special utility application you can get from Night Owl. The first tech I spoke to about the problem suggested using the utility HandBrake to convert the file, that did not work. The 2nd tech sent me the Night Owl converter software that isn’t listed ANYWHERE on their site. Finally, I was able to export the video. However, I had to use a PC to convert the file before I could take it to my Mac for editing, they have Mac and PC DVR software, but only a PC version of the magic converter application.
The playback controls are confusing and misnamed. For instance, the playback controls have “REW” and “FWD” buttons. Those don’t go forward or back, they control the speed of playback. Confusing. Also, even though the DVR can be connected to the internet, the camera and system settings can only be made at the device itself.
This last part is especially infuriating, I frequently want to fine-tune the settings and alarms, often at inconvenient hours, I have to go into my store to do so. Most networkable devices today give you as much power remotely as they do in front of the unit.
Downloading saved video is confusing too, I couldn’t figure it out without a tech showing me first. As I said, I’m a software professional, I can usually make bad software do my bidding, but Night Owl’s software is so opaque and mysterious. You must search for and find saved video by camera and date. The results only show as thumbnails, the dates/times are no longer displayed. Once you’re in a playback window you can click an arrow “download” button that shows all the saved video for that camera, you can check which ones to download. This window is very useful, I’m mystified why they didn’t make it easier to get to.
Nothing else can happen while downloading video, even from a different client. It would be very nice to have some simple video editing controls such as speeding up or slowing down sections of saved video. That’s not a deal-breaker, but would be very nice.
Even though I’ve setup my Night Owl system and the 4 cameras I’m going to spend the hours required to reinstall it and return it to CostCo, try a different system. It makes me very frustrated every day, a new system should save me many hours each week.

  15. chito magat

We need the top five cctv cameras system for our coming bidding. An exclusive university/college in Manila. The required units must not be made in CHINA as per advice/informed by the client. Hoping to receive some brand & specifications.

  16. Good idea chito, we will make a seperate post reviewing the top CCTV cameras. Best of luck on your project.

  17. Hey Just,

Sounds like a pain in the neck to have done all of that just to return. Agreed that these systems can get pretty complicated. If you want a easy plug ‘n play security camera try this >><<. It is all-in-one camera and has seamless setup and integration. We will update this list shortly with it in 3rd place because we are so impressed with it. Thanks for the information!

  18. Steven Waters

I wouldn’t define 500gb as a ‘huge’ hard drive anymore. You should get that as a mininum if you are backing up all of your security footage. You can always record on top of it and then pull the latest 36-72 hours of video feed and use that as needed.

  19. David

I have the frontpoint security cameras and I love the doorbell camera that they have added. I like to be able to see the people before I open the door. you can never be to safe today…especially the older you get. Now I can see if people are tricking me or not!

  20. Anna

I have the piper and I like it. I choose it because their were no activation fees. Yea there’s no live support, but it wasn’t something that I needed. It works great for my needs!

  21. Andrew

I have the Arlo system and I like it. I love the wireless system and the night vision is amazing. It does take a little time to get out of sleep mode, but I’ve tested it many times with my family and every time I have gotten a recording of them. So I know if someone’s there that shouldn’t be, I’ll get them tape!

  22. Ashton

I live at end of a road without any neighbors on the back of my home. Very lonely and isolated and right now I am thinking about a 4 Camera POE setup with Blue Iris running on a home server.

  23. Martins

Awesome article and reviews. I was going to purchase a complete unit then I saw this reviews. Would somebody with next to no PC experience have the capacity to set a Q-See QT5682-8E3-1 8 Channel 960H/720p DVR with 900TVL High Resolution Cameras framework? For inside observing. Martins

  24. Walter

After huge amounts of examination, I ended up with Funlux camera, Can more than one individual view the same camera on the off chance that they have the application? My mother and kin and I are requiring something like this for my elderly father when he is home alone. Could you utilize more than one Funlux camera on the application?

  25. Hey Martins,

Your best bet if you don’t have much technical expertise is to go with the Frontpoint or #1 choice, both which are very simple DIY options with quick setup results.

  26. Dylan

I have the Q-See and although I love the system and don’t have any problems with it, I can’t believe that’s there’s no on off button. But I guess they just didn’t expect anyone to be turning off. It’s a great system if this little feature doesn’t bother you.

  27. George

Yeah the Piper isn’t your typical security system. This is for someone who likes to just peek in once and awhile to make sure everything is okay. The alerts are cool too, but is all self monitored. It’s not for everyine, but the cameras do work great!

  28. Ed

This post brought up a lot of things I wasn’t thinking about that I needed. I’m glad I saw this or I would have went with a system that didn’t have everything I needed.

  29. Sam

I have the Amcrest and I don’t think the large hard-drive is a con. Yes it might be useless but that’s okay, the prices are so low it doesn’t matter. I can see if I was paying extra for it but I’m not.

  30. Rose

Ever since getting cameras up outside our house has been peaceful. I love loading the live feed from my phone at night rather then standing up – walking to the blinds and checking (scared) that way. I feel in charge of where I live, I can call the police anytime needed and the cameras are a great deterrent. Thanks for the helpful information here, I went with the #5 setup.

  31. Jessics

I wouldn’t consider the Piper a security system. There’s no one watching and monitoring your house except you. You do all the work. If you want an alarm where the police are notified than you need a real security system not s monitoring system. This one isn’t for everyone.

  32. Jessica

I have the Sharx and I am not happy with the camera resolution! I’ve had so many problems with it either not working or I just can see what’s on the screen. I really in the market for a new security camera. I would advise not getting the Sharx brand.

  33. Maggie

I have the Annke at my business and they get the job done for me. These cameras are strong and sturdy and really good up great in the weather! Picture quality is good, could be a bit better but like I said it gets the job done. People are recognizable on the viewer.

  34. Missy

Funlux is a great system and I can see why you gave them a great score, but I did have some trouble playing back the video. It took me some time to figure it out. But once I got that down, I now love the system!

  35. Taylor

I didn’t realize that there were so many different brands out there to choose from. I have my work cut out for me picking which one I want to go with!

  36. Henry Edmondson

I personally feel anything less than a 1-2TB storage doesnt make for a good security camera storage. You never know how far back you may need to go to check for a particular frame. HD recording and Night vision is a must too. Its my security, it Matters!

  37. Jessica

The Annke system is great. The price is the best around and rhebcsners are great. Love the black and white switch for night vision,. Yeah the picture could be s little better, but it’s not horrible. It works great!!

  38. Laura

These are some really good security cameras. They seem well established and the smart phone system seems really easy to use. What I don’t want to get myself into is a big tangled mess of wires running in and out of my home where they are positioned. Price isn’t the issue but the convenience is. I’m getting one that will last for years to come and not be outdated when the next thing hits. My advice is stay with wired security cameras so they can run 24/7 and you don’t have to worry about changing in and out batteries and it possibly not recording when it matters.

  39. Mark

I agree with the night owl. It’s horrible trying to get the recordings. I couldn’t get it to open up no matter what program I used. I’m sticking with ADT. They do everything and it gives me less of a headache!

  40. Victor McHugh

It has been 8 Months since I had the Amcrest 960H video security system installed at my parent’s place. So far I am pleased. The Night Vision is very detailed, complete with High-resolution video. I personally find the 3gig Hard drive more than adequate. I’d definitely recommend it.

  41. Victor McHugh

It has been 8 Months since I had the Amcrest 960H video security system installed at my parent’s place. So far I am pleased. The Night Vision is very detailed, complete with High-resolution video. I personally find the 3 TERABYTE HARD DRIVE more than adequate. I’d definitely recommend it.

  42. Zooks P

I use the Arlo Smart Home Security Camera System. my main reason for purchasing the unit was its wireless nature and its remote server storage. the major problem I am having with the system is the not so great night vision and having to replace its battery once every other month or there about. Nice system though.

  43. Laura Flowers

I get a little confused between a home security system and security camera system. Aren’t they the same thing or can they be?

  44. Jeffrey D.

@Laura. I would advise you choose the Arlo Smart Home security system, because of the monitoring and activation fee that Frontpoint attracts. If that isn’t a problem to you, I advise you choose the frontpoint security system because the Arlo has been seen to have some battery issues.

  45. Trevor

Looking for a weatherproof. Wired camera . Good for -30C also has power over Ethernet.
Like to have a system 4 camera, receiver and 1tb hard drive. Expanded to 6 or 8 camera. Not break the bank.

  46. Romy

    Great article.
All the cameras are good but the best one among these according to me is Arlo.

  47. Jason

As long as I can view what is going on from my phone — I’ll get it. I get a little confused when reading about certain ‘memory storage’ and terms like that. Cloud storage may be an option as well for some companies now but then you end up paying a monthly fee.

  48. Derrick G

Do any of these security cameras offer free cloud storage in addition to android/ios support ?

  49. Daniel

The Piper Cam seem to stand out from the pack. Its No activation fee, No installation fee and No monthly fee make it my choice. I can live with the No live customer support.

  50. Amanda

I’m so glad I saw this post! My husband told me that security cameras were horribly expensive. But after seeing this I think we could actually afford one. He must not know that they came down in price so much. Now I just need to pick which one I want.

  51. Jacob

Wow , where have I been?! I had no idea that there where so many different options out now. I have Honeywell cameras from the good and old trusty company. I’ve been considering something newer and nicer but I after going through this, I think the trusty old company is still the one for me. Don’t fix something that’s not broken!

  52. Grace

Only bad thing about the purely wireless cams are that someone could steal them right? At least if you spend the time to do wired surveillance they don’t pop right off your house for the burglars to take with them!

  53. Terrance

I don’t think basic cuts it in today’s world anymore. These companies really need to upgrade their equipment and keep up with each other. The quality of live feed for night surveillance also needs to get better. Most of the time you can’t actually use the images to pursue the criminal. However, if your security cams capture live feed of the car the crooks use that can be helpful. Then you can pause and screenshot, zoom in and possibly find the license plate or features of the car that are easy to identify later (rims, scratches, lights, colors).

  54. Petra D

The Arlo Smart Home Security Camera System is my favourite tool for keeping an eye on my home front. the 2 standard hd camera has been living up to expectation. i am not feeling like having an upgrade but what i would prefer is an option for cloud storage.

  55. Harry

With the help of the Piper camera. the police were able to apprehend an intruder who broke into our house. A security camera is not able to stop a crime most time but it sure comes in handy in apprehending the culprit.

  56. Grace

Amcrest is the first and only security camera I have used. i have stuck with it for over 2 years and haven’t had cause to change it, mainly because the picture quality is superb and the night vision great. It also has a mobile app that works seamlessly with my phone. Definitely worth the money!

  57. Happy user

My experience when it comes to video security systems is far below average but installing the Amcrest security camera was a breeze. There was no need to consult the detailed instruction manual as it was very easy. picture quality and night vision is superb and their customer service is very responsive. A very detailed review you have made but Amcrest is highly recommended.

  58. Edward

I had read online that some users of Amcrest security cam have some issues with the Smartclient app. This didn’t deter me because when I contacted their customer service, they were quite helpful and I haven’t had such problem with my unit.

  59. Loveth

the funlux is a basic security system that provides good quality function and some advanced features all at a reasonable price. Despite this the funlux system is great.

  60. Doug

Foscam?! I haven’t heard much about them, but I’m curious when someone said there’s a lot you can do with them. I will definitely e looking into them for sure…thanks

  61. Sanders

Wow how long did it take to put this post together. There are so many options I don’t really know where to start. I’m definitely getting rid of the overpriced ones and don’t want to super cheap one…I’m going somewhere in the middle!

  62. Tailor Locke

My first outdoor security camera system was the Amcrest security cam. what sold me in on it straight away was what you outlined in the pro section of the amcrest review. i would highy recommend it to any one who desires a good security camera system.

  63. Heather G.

Security cameras come as an added advantage to a security system is my view. The automation features are really worth a mention just as the mobile app is easy to navigate and use. I think it’s better having one system that gets the entire work done.

  64. Ottie

A friend highly recomended the Q-see 8 channel High resolution Security Camera system, quite pleased to see it featured on your list. I may have to go for it after all. Thanks for the detailed review.

  65. Dasharath Singh Rathore

If you do a surveillance system with a DVR make sure to keep your login and password credentials somewhere safe and backed up! Otherwise when it comes time to use the footage or view it, you won’t be able to log into your own security cameras.

  66. Grace

I find it interesting that you have to make sure that the Security camera are water proof. Would a company really sell you camera for outside that are not?!

  67. Shelby

I can’t believe all the information I need to know prior to getting a system. The width and angle of the camera, which are good in certain lighting, the quality of the video?! Hopefully the salesman will help me out!

  68. Amber

I’m just curious if it’s a good idea to hook the systems up yourself?? I mean is it possible to hook it up wrong where it doesn’t work properly and I’m putting myself at danger?

  69. Kelsey

I’m sorry but anything where I need to monitor it myself is not a security system to me. I’m not Security. Those those be on a list by themselves. Always be careful…this could be a reason it’s so cheap.

  70. Taylor

I haven’t had any problems with amcrest either. I think people need to realize that there nothing in this world that will please everyone and people usually only review something when they are upset.

  71. Taylor

I’d like to mention that app control is really nice. I didn’t think I would ever use it but I do all the time. Especially at night when I’m walking from my car and trying to unlock the door to get in. Once I’m inside I start putting my stuff away and forget to disarm the alarm. With the app I never forget. It’s a nice feature to have!

  72. Sammie

Heathers right. My system didn’t have camera at first. Just the alarm that went right to the company. If the company can access view of the cameras they set up. This is an even better security and better way to see if it’s a false alarm or not!.

  73. Kevin

There is no system that works 100% to everyone’s liking and let’s face it things go wrong, accidents happen. It’s all about finding the system with as little glitches as possible..

  74. Hey Amber, you may want to go with a wireless one like the #1 reviewed we have up right now. Then you don’t have to worry about the tangled mess. You can also hire an expert to come do it for $50-100 and then you have a wired (24/7 monitoring instead of batteries) security camera system up in place.

  75. Yes, most come with a free iOS or Android app that you can view the cameras feed on for free. The live feed viewing is not as clear as on a desktop or laptop computer but still very good. Swann has their own app as well as Amcrest, Nest and other top brands you see outlined in this guide.

  76. Joanna

Before reading this i thought lower price was better but now I’m more concerned if the equipment is reliable or maybe it’s cheap equipment and that’s why the cost is low?

  77. Joan

This list really makes a compliment decision a little easier. I didn’t really know how complicated security system were until I started researching them. Thanks for all the info!!

  78. Tammy

Definitely don’t go with someone who treats it like a side business! They don’t have your best interest at heart. Go with a reliable company with a good reputation.

  79. Kathy

Remote viewing should be an option today. If they don’t have it, they are definitely outdated! Go somewhere else!

  80. Paula

I guess I’m just old fashion but when I think of a security camera, I think of people monitoring my home for me, not me doing it myself. I guess the times have changed where people monitor themselves….is it to save money?

  81. Kerri

Thanks for the great guide. I am a novice when it comes to these security gadgets but I know I need some for where I live. Now I can get started putting up some cams outside so my X who has a restraining order on me won’t get close or if he does I have video footage of it now.

  82. Spy Surveillance

Thanks for the above information. . . I started putting in surveillance systems a couple years ago. I have intentionally avoided ‘partnering’ with any particular manufacturer. As indicated above, there are numerous systems, and unless the proper research is performed, you could end up with a system that doesn’t meet your needs. I have installed a lot of different systems and the last dozen or so have been from GW security. . . good product. I haven’t had to use their tech support yet, but when balancing between cost, quality, and variety, GW meets the needs of most of my customers. Thanks again for providing the information from the research you performed.

  83. Hi Grace, we just want to make sure people don’t try to use indoor pan-tilt cameras outside or in their garage where they would be subject to severe weather! You never know what people might do to try to save a penny.

  84. Eye For Details

I’m curious, I’ve read through all the reviews (I’m currently in the market to upgrade my own security system) and caught that there was a common thread on many of these items:
    • #1 – Arlo Smart Home Security Camera System
    • #2 – Amcrest 960H
    • #5 -Amcrest 720P HD

6 out of 10 reviews state for remote viewing “personal computer or any Android device.” So, my question is; Is this an oversight of your reviews, can you use iOS smartphones too or only Android devices for mobile phones? If it’s the latter, then I would think these manufacturers will miss a lot of business (just my opinion). With so many security systems out there, your reviews really do help!

  85. iOS absolutely can be used for viewing as well! We will get our review updated so it shows that, obviously these security camera companies do not want to miss out on that large market. Thanks for the catch.

  86. Competition drives costs down! These have become available for millions of home owners and with so many different brands competing, you the consumer wins and can get secured for only a couple hundred bucks or less!

  87. Hey Trevor — that describes 5+ of the top 10 reviewed above. You can get those Ethernet ports that go into an outlet and power internet through the home. Then you don’t have to run ethernet cords all around the house (this is what we did on our home tests).

Thanks for the guide! Life is definitely better (safer and feel at peace) with a few security cams in front of the house. We also installed a doorbell camera that views separate of the security cameras. I wish you could get them all in one package so I didn’t have to view it from two separate apps but whatever works and keeps out the jerks 😉

I have installed several 16 camera systems for clients. Mostly the GW security 1080p nvr listed in last place with 5mp varifocal cams. These systems are actually top notch for surveillance. Super easy to set up. Mildly easy to tweak (fps bitrate main and substreams). I have yet to expierece their customer service due to no real problems except a singular DOA poe switch included with a kit– 2 weeks and no call responce –have to use their 800#. I have even used Abox (android TV) an Onvif APP to set up multiple view stations on same system. Set up at 3 MP with 12 terabyte HDD and you have 30+ days of recordingwith 16 cams. Phone viewing as easy as it gets (QR scan). – Possible negs no email alerts-(no way to test but no clients calling me either)— for high res review on computer do not recommend their application for 16 cams let alone 32— It’s way to cpu hungry—- fact is they now have H.265 encoding on their new nvrs which should drastically reduce that problem as well as expand storage space. As it stands,my clients and I are pleased with theses systems.

What if a homeowner goes on vacation for two weeks and someone breaks in or steals something from the barn across the yard? Unless you are constantly monitoring, you will appreciate large recording times especially if you get home and it takes a few days to figure out you have been robbed. The possible identification of the criminal will be valuable. The deterrent factor at that point did not work for you and you should not advertise video cameras even if you live in one of those police states that require it by law–it is your property after all.

  91. Agreed Rick. The cloud storage or long term backup (big 500gb+ storage) is recommended so that users can view events that have happened up to 30 days.

  92. Hey Laura – depending on the provider they can be the same thing. Typically though, a security camera system is a Do-it-yourself kit of cameras that you put throughout the home (or outside) and do the surveillance yourself. This is done through a DVR that continually records the data (and re-records over it every 15 to 30 days but the user can save certian times of activity to their computer or hard drive). These systems usually do not have a monthly monitoring rate either. They have free smart phone control but will not call you or dispatch the police in case of an emergency. For that you do need a security system with a monitoring company which costs around $50+ a month.

    Hope that helps!

This review is quite thorough, but most of them have lower video resolution than those offered in the market. If you want to get any of the brands listed above, check for their most recent upgrades like HD resolution, higher capacity for storage and other new features. I, for one, am very particular with the durability especially in harsh weather conditions, so the weather-proof cams are on top of my list.

I have not been able to find a clear and honest review or recommendation anywhere online until I found this. Really well done. Thank you!

I bought Q-See system in 2012 and connected 6 – 720P day/night cameras for our house. I used the app for remote monitoring for whenever I am not home, which was great when it worked.
One outdoor camera filled with water but Q-see replaced it.
The system was quite buggy (especially after switching to Win 10), so remote monitoring became a pain. Their online help wasn’t much help. Finally, the PVR stopped working so system is down. Q-see were not that interested in helping and would not help me trouble shoot the PVR.
The Q-see system did everything I needed but not sure if I will go with them for a new system. I think 5 years is not a long time to say the system is obsolete. So I am looking for another vendor.
    Thanks for the helpful article.

Wanted to just stop in the comments here and thank who ever wrote this. I have been in over my head trying to pick a security system for my home. I wanted cameras but had no idea what to go for or what I needed to spend. This break down and review of a full list of cameras was so helpful! Thank you very much! I am going to look into a few of these prices. It seems Amazon is the best place to get them!

Who would’ve guessed that there are so many options to choose from. I feel like they are all similar to each-other with the main differences in how they store (Cloud storage or DVR) your security footage and if they are wireless or not.

As a follow-up to my April 19 comment, and in fairness to Q-See, I want to add the following:

Q-See tech support finally called me (I was amazed) and Mike walked me through an extensive trouble shooting process (with hard drive removed, checking voltages, etc.), we finally determined that the mother board was at fault. I certainly don’t blame Q-See for that and assume it resulted from one of several power outages we had.

Anyway, based on the fabulous help from Mike (Q-See), I decided to buy a new system (it is amazing to me the changes 5 years can bring), so with HD cameras and a 16 circuit system, I am in business again (or soon will be) with Q-See.

Epilogue……they need to get “Mike” on the phone quicker for outstanding customer service.

Great post you have here, choosing the best home security for your house is very important especially for those that travel a lot.

I’m confused about the Pros and Cons that are listed for #7. “Sharx Security SCNC3905 High Definition 1080P WAIRED PoE AND Wireless b/g/n Weatherproof Outdoor H.264/MPEG4 IP Network Camera”. Under Pros, you have listed “It gives superb image quality”, but under Cons, you have listed “Picture quality is good but not very good”. Which is it?

  101. Updated that comment, sorry that was confusing. What we meant was it is clear up close but then very distorted from distanced farther than 10′ away. Depending on the ultimate use of it, not the best choice for most consumers.

  102. Justin Lewis

I was reading about the new Honeywell cam, its nice. Check it out.

People will encourage more to Provide security camera in the home or office system. Hope you will keep up the good information.

  104. Alice Mason

Right now I’m just using a camera I bought from $35. It’s just a camera and has limited features with the app it is compatible with. Needless to say, I’m due for an upgrade. I’ve been reading this list and the Frontpoint camera sticks out too. I like that it has all the features I require plus some more! A doorbell camera is ideal for people because you don’t realize how important it is to get the shot of a person’s face. This can come in handy for security, and just in general. Thanks for sharing this excellent review.

Should make sure your cameras can do:
    – Day and night vision
    – High definition
    – Easy to use
    – Remote access
    – Systems for 2, 4, 8, 16 and more cameras
    – Indoor and outdoor

  106. Sabastion

A bit of a undertaking / pain on the startup of these but well worth it once it is done and you can view from your mobile device. Took me a full afternoon to do it myself. Not a bad idea to pay a tech to install the security cameras for you if you will be running wires plus the DVR kit. Thanks for this guide, helps a lot.
